Madrid Schools Debate and Public Speaking Program (CAM)

Since 2013, the ESU Spain has partnered with the Consejería de Juventud, Educación y Deporte de la Comunidad de Madrid to bring expert training in public speaking and debate to participating schools in the Bilingual Project of the Subdirección General de Innovación, Calidad y Enseñanza.

Expertly trained ESU Mentors arrive at participating schools and work directly with secondary school teachers, helping them to incorporate debate and public speaking techniques into their previously established curriculums. Teachers learn how to encourage integrated skills development in their classroom, thereby reinforcing the students’ understanding of and interest in course material.

From the very first day, students engage in variety of activities that are designed specifically to develop public speaking and debate skills while boosting overall self-esteem and confidence. Our intensive workshops focus on developing presentation abilities, debate structures strategies, speech writing, use of logic and reasoning, and critical understanding of normative issues that are relevant to the lives of today’s Spanish teens. Students learn to participate in lively, spirited yet respectful conversations that bring subject matter out of the classroom and into a real-world context.

Team Spain WSDC 2015 Singapore

The CAM program culminates in the Annual Madrid Schools Debate and Public Speaking Competition.  All participating schools send a team to compete in a preliminary round of semifinals.  The top six competing teams pass to the concluding Grand Final, held at the distinguished and historic Ateneo de Madrid. The Grand Final consists in equal parts of debate and public speaking, in which one team is awarded as “Best Debate Team” and one individual speaker is awarded as “Best Public Speaker”. Awardees of the CAM Tournament have gone on to participate at global tournaments, including the International Public Speaking Competition in London and the World Schools Debate Championship 2015 in Singapore.

University Programs

Through the advent of the Internet and new information technologies, the world has become increasingly more competitive in recent years across all sectors.  Because of this, it is imperative that today’s university students in Spain learn how to move themselves in what has become the universal language of English.

To this end, it is not enough to simply study grammar and vocabulary. To enter the competitive environment of today’s economy, both domestically and globally, students must learn to 1) formulate their own ideas in a structured and logical manner; 2) communicate these ideas with passion and courage; 3) connect with their audience in order to solicit the desired outcome of their communications.

Through its university programs, the ESU España addresses this crucial need. We work directly with the student, either in a small group class or a one-to-one basis, to develop and hone in on their public speaking abilities as well as augment overall self-esteem and self-worth.

Additionally, the ESU España customizes programming to the specific needs of the University, working closely with academic coordinators and student actvity organizers to ensure that all students have direct access to the best trainings and resources available, as well as opportunities to participate in tournaments and educational programming with other Universities and abroad.

A Call for Mentors

The Fundación English-Speaking Union España provides participants in Spain with the interpersonal communications tools to achieve global opportunity. Through the medium of the English language, we train our students in debate and public speaking techniques and provide them with opportunities to travel and compete in international competitions. Participants gain the poise, logic and eloquence in order to promote themselves successfully at home and abroad.

We are currently hiring Mentors to facilitate our high school and university level programs for non-native English Speakers in Spain for the 2015-2016 academic year. Mentors are trained to give workshops on debate and public speaking technique, as well as to monitor and support the development of our participants (both students and their instructors).
